Ιn an idyllic green spot in the heart of Athens, you will find the historic restaurant of Magemenos Avlos, a legendary and beloved hangout of people of art, science and culture. Avlos’ story started decades ago in Vatrahonisi, which was just a vacant lot back then, near Ilissos’ stream, while Proskopon Square was still a dirt road.
Magemenos Avlos first opened on a small road called Amynta, originally as a shop of the chocolate industry PAVLIDIS. Over the years, Avlos begun to serve popular European dishes, which fascinated its customers, and gradually, from a sweetshop, it turned into a restaurant. This is where the long story of Magemenos Avlos begins.
Avlos was the first to introduce the European dish “fondue” to the Athenians, and shortly after that, the popular Italian pizza, as well as many other impressive recipes that made the restaurant a hotspot of gastronomy and culture of the time.
Many distinguished people of Greek culture and politics favored Magemenos Avlos, including the former King of Greece, Constantine, Konstantinos Karamanlis, Manos Hadjidakis who used to hang out there, Nikos Gatsos, who wrote in the restaurant some of his most famous lyrics, Dimitris Horn, Manos Katrakis, Alexis Minotis, Tzeni Karezi, Aliki Vougiouklaki and many others….
Since 1961, time is standing still in Magemenos Avlos, and every corner is full of charm and tradition, making the place uniquely atmospheric and an ideal setting for gastronomy and music to shine.
